Domestic Hot Water Heating

What it is

Domestic Hot Water (DHW) systems provide hot, potable water on demand for washrooms, cleaning and process uses, typically delivered between 45°C and 85°C depending on the application.  This represents 15-20% of the annual utility cost for most facilities, or more than 50% for businesses that are high-volume process water users such as restaurants, laundromats or carwashes.

How it works

Typically water is heated, and then stored until needed.  Currently the most cost effective means of heating water is with high-efficiency (or condensing) natural gas fired water tanks.  Condensing units can be tightly grouped because the combustion exhaust systems are very flexible and the units loose very little heat.  Multi-unit systems offer the benefit of affordably maintaining DHW production during periods of low demand while having the capacity to quickly satisfy peak demand. A multi-unit system also allows maintenance or repairs on individual units without disrupting DHW supply or severely affecting system efficiency.

Benefits
  • Multi unit installations can accommodate huge variations in volume demand, with the lowest per unit cost of DHW production relative to other heating sources
  • Multi unit installations allow isolation and maintenance on a single unit for uninterrupted service
  • Multi unit installations create commonality of service parts, reducing maintenance downtime and inventory or parts costs
